The SODV oversight organizational structure is composed
of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Ocean Leadership Alliance,
and an external advisory committee, the Independent Oversight
Committee (IOC).
National Science Foundation
The Marine Geosciences Section of the Ocean Sciences Division
sponsors the SODV program.
Dr. Rodey Batiza, Section Head
Dr. James F. Allan, Program Director, Ocean Drilling Program
John F. Walter, SODV Project Officer
Ocean Leadership Alliance
The Ocean Leadership Alliance consists of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, Inc. (Ocean Leadership), Texas A&M Research Foundation (TAMRF)/Texas A&M
University (TAMU), and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia
University (LDEO). Although management of the program is integrated
across all the Ocean Leadership Alliance institutions, Ocean Leadership has oversight
responsibility for the SODV acquisition process. TAMRF/TAMU is under
subcontract from Ocean Leadership and is responsible for securing a contract for a
suitable drill ship, converting the vessel to an SODV, and outfitting
the shipboard science laboratories and support facilities. LDEO is
under subcontract from Ocean Leadership and is responsible for securing a contract
with a well logging service provider and assisting TAMRF/TAMU with the
conversion of the logging specific areas of the SODV.
Independent Oversight
Committee
The SODV Independent Oversight Committee (IOC) serves as NSF's
independent review panel responsible for insuring that a quality
product is produced using solid program management approaches.
IOC accomplishes this by reviewing the progress on the development
of the conversion of an existing drilling ship to a science
research platform.
