In order to enhance the scientific output of the U.S. scientists involved with the IODP, USSSP supports post-expedition scientific activities relevant to the drilling expedition and the subsequent contribution to IODP publications volumes and/or outside literature. 

The nature and amount of the work and the costs involved vary widely from expedition to expedition and between disciplines. For each expedition, requests for post-expedition science support are peer-reviewed by a subcommittee to determine whether the proposed work is appropriate and necessary to complete the scientific work of the expedition. If deemed appropriate, funding is then allocated.
